Tips For Switching Business Energy

As a business energy customer, you do not get points for loyalty if you stay with one provider. It is estimated 300,000 small business customers will switch energy suppliers in 2008 because of rising gas and electricity prices.

In most cases the rates for a new customer are lower than repeat business electricity customers. If you shop around and switch, this can mean a saving of over £2,000 a year for small businesses using only 25,000 kilowatt hours.

  • Begin by Comparing Rates – all you need to do is submit a few details and request a call back or alternatively call 0800 970 2346. Rates for business electricity contracts range anywhere from 6.7p to 15p per unit. You can certainly save money by finding the least expensive rate.

  • Sign up for a Contract – energy providers typically charge less money when a business signs a service contract. Don’t forget if you are new to an office, set up your service immediately and make sure you are not being charged outrageous rates for not being in a contract.

  • Switch as often as you can. You have no obligation to stay with a company for a long time. Be sure to shop around for the best rates but stick to your contract to avoid cancellation fees.

  • Make a note of your renewal date on your calendar. Also keep an eye out for a notice in the post from your provider about your services expiring. Accept or reject the new contract in writing. Some providers will automatically roll you into a new contract unless you opt out of the option. With a keen eye you can keep up with your notice period and switch to a new provider seamlessly when your contract is up. The ‘Assumptive Renewal’ trap that suppliers use is legally-binding even if you do nothing and ignore their letters.

  • Is there a chance to save money on other utility bills? Review what a new electricity supplier might offer you as a discount for also changing your water and gas services.

  • Seek advice. Remember to use comparison sites such as www.energyChoices.co.uk for advice on the best provider for your energy services. This help is free of charge. Don’t pay a price broker to compare prices for you.

  • Don’t head back to your previous provider even if they offer you a better deal after you’ve switched. Practices like these are monitored by Ofgem and can land you with fees for cancelling your new service.

  • Shop around. Many suppliers will offer you extra incentives to sign up. For example British Gas Business (www.britishgasbusiness.co.uk) offer 1 month's free gas and guarantee the cheapest electricity rates.
