Scottish Gas is one of the leading suppliers of gas and electricity to homes throughout Scotland. If you live in Scotland and are considering switching energy supplier, Scottish Gas may be the answer.
Scottish Gas is the trading name of British Gas in Scotland. It employs around 3,500 staff, with most based in its Edinburgh headquarters and Uddingston, Glasgow customer service centres.
Scottish Gas offers three main tariffs for its gas, electricity and dual fuel customers:
Scottish Gas also offers two green energy tariffs called Future Energy and Zero Carbon, which, although cost a little bit extra, help the energy supplier develop renewable energy sources and help reduce your carbon footprint.
Other tariffs from Scottish Gas include prepayment meters, and Economy 7, and the supplier also offers boiler installation and the HomeCare central heating maintenance and repair service.
The British Gas corporation was formed in 1973, when the 12 old gas boards split into regions, each responsible for a particular energy distribution area. In 1986, the British Gas Corp transferred to British Gas plc, and shares in British Gas plc were offered for sale.
In 1997 the company de-merged into two strands: BG plc and Centrica. The focus of BG plc is transportation, research and technology. Centrica, on the other hand, is concerned with retail and trading.
The table below shows a breakdown of how the energy supplied by Scottish Gas has been generated. This it called its fuel mix. It shows what percentage of each fuel source such as coal, gas, and renewable sources has been used:
| Fuel source | Scottish Gas fuel mix | Average UK fuel mix |
| Coal | 18% | 33% |
| Gas | 56% | 43% |
| Nuclear | 20% | 16% |
| Renewables | 4% | 6% |
| Other | 2% | 2% |
For the third year running, Scottish Gas’ electricity has had the lowest carbon emissions of any major supplier in Great Britain*. The energy supplier is investing over £750million in renewable projects over the next five years, and has already invested in six wind farm sites around Britain including the Glens of Foudland and Braes of Dounne.
Scottish Gas also has a specialist team to help you make your home more energy-efficient. For more tips on how to cut your energy bills, read our Complete Guide to Energy Efficiency.
