Previously known as Scottish & Southern Energy, SSE supplies electricity and gas under the Southern Electric, Scottish Hydro Electric, SWALEC and Atlantic brands.

The company offers a range of additional benefits to customers at no extra charge, including a 10% discount at Argos if signed up to the Energyplus Argos tariff.

Services

  • Standard electricity, gas and dual fuel tariffs
  • Prepayment meter tariffs
  • Special packages for customers with particular requirements, e.g. elderly, disabled or chronically sick
  • Professionally-installed home insulation for customers receiving priority benefits
  • Renewable energy tariffs with offers

History

The Scottish & Southern Energy Group was formed in 1999 with the merger of Scottish Hydro-Electric and Southern Electric.

Following the acquisition of SWALEC in 2000 and Atlantic Electric & Gas in 2004, in 2010, the company rebranded as SSE.

Supporting local communities

Community at Heart, SSE's community volunteering project, gives each of its 22,000-plus employees the opportunity to take a day out of their typical working life to support local community projects.

Organisations, charities or community groups can 'borrow' a team of hands, minds, ideas or skills for a whole day completely free of charge.

In the first year - 2010 - around 5,000 days were used to help many different organisations including charities, schools, parish councils and hospitals.
