How do I find out who my energy supplier is?

Dear Chris, I have just moved in to a flat and was wondering how I find out which company or companies supply my gas and electricity?

Many thanks,

Sara Hall

Our expert says...

One of the first things you should do when you move into a home is establish who supplies your electricity and gas. You’ll have to notify your provider of your current meter readings as soon as you move in.

Doing this will ensure that you don’t end up paying for energy that you haven’t used, and at the same time you can ask that any future bills to the property are sent in your name.

Electricity

To find out which company supplies your electricity, you will need to call your local distribution company.

This will vary from place to place so, depending on where your new property is, you should call one of the following numbers:

  • Eastern England - EDF Energy: 0870 196 3082
  • East and West Midlands - Central Networks: 0845 603 0618
  • London - EDF Energy: 0845 601 4516
  • North Wales, Merseyside, Cheshire - Sp Power Systems and North Shropshire: 0845 270 9101
  • North East England - NEDL (part of CE Electric UK): 08450 702 703
  • Yorkshire - YEDL (part of CE Electric UK): 08450 702 703
  • North West - United Utilities: 0870 751 0093
  • North Scotland - SSE Power Distribution: 0845 026 2554
  • South Scotland - SP Power Systems: 0845 270 9101
  • South East England (Kent & EDF Energy parts of Sussex and Surrey): 0845 601 4516
  • Southern England - SSE Power Distribution: 0845 026 2554
  • South Wales - Western Power Distribution: 0845 601 5972
  • South West England - Western Power Distribution: 0845 601 5972

Gas

To find out which energy provider supplies your gas, you will need to get in touch with the company responsible for transporting your gas from its source to your home.

For most households, gas is transported via National Grid, Northern Gas Networks, Scotland Gas Networks, Southern Gas Networks or Wales & West Utilities.

To contact any of these companies you will have to call 0870 608 1524.

Alternatively your supply could be transported by none of the above and instead via an Independent Gas Transporter (IGT).

If this is the case, you will have to call Envoy on 0845 055 6199 to get information on IGTs.

Compare and switch as soon as possible

Whoever your transporter is, when you call them they should be able to tell you who supplies your gas and provide you with a contact number.

To give you this information though you will need to tell them your address and/or meter serial number which can usually be found on a sticker attached to the meter.

You will probably place on their standard tariff when you inform them that you have just moved in.

This is normally their most expensive tariff so I recommend that you compare energy tariffs online as soon as you know who your supplier is and if necessary switch onto a cheaper deal, which may well be with a different company.
