While the government has closed its boiler scrappage scheme, some energy providers are still offering discounts against the cost of a new boiler. (24/04/10).

Do you have an old boiler that needs replacing? Would you like to reduce your energy bills by around £200 a year? Then a boiler scrappage scheme could suit you.

In this guide we’ll show you what the benefits of the different schemes, how to work out if you are eligible and how to apply.

What is the boiler scrappage scheme?

The boiler scrappage scheme is a new government initiative, designed to encourage people to replace old boilers with new, more energy-efficient ones.

The boiler scrappage scheme for England went live in January and all 125,000 vouchers offering £400 discounts on a new boiler were used up by March. The scheme offered eligible households a £400 discount on a new boiler, or renewable heating technology, when they traded in their old one.

In Wales, a boiler scrappage scheme is being launched in April.

The scheme from the Welsh Assembly Government provides a £500 discount for the over 60s when they replace a G-rated boiler with an A-rated boiler.

In Scotland, a separate boiler scrappage scheme will also be launched in coming year

What are the benefits of replacing your boiler?

The main benefit of replacing your boiler is that it will help you reduce your energy bills. New boilers are much more efficient and the government estimates that they could save households an average of £235 a year.

Replacing your boiler will also reduce your carbon footprint. The government expects the scheme to save 140,000 tonnes of CO2 per year – equivalent to taking 45,000 cars off the road.

Can I get extra boiler discounts?

Yes, there are several additional discounts available. These discounts come for those you did not qualify for the English boiler scrappage scheme or just missed the vote.

In Wales and Scotland, people can doubled up on the government discounts and extra discounts from energy providers.

British Gas, E.On, Scottish & Southern and Npower (www.npower.com) have all said they will continue offer discounts for homeowners scrapping their old boilers..

However, it’s best to compare several boiler quotes before you choose one, to make sure you are getting the best deal.

We applied to this scheme, after chasing up on where the payment was after 25 days, we were told that they had not recieved our voucher and invoice and now that it had expired we would not be entitled to the payment and it must have got lost in the post. It would not be accepted that this could be an administration error on their part and therefore we have now paid out over £1500 on a boiler and been left £400 out of pocket. Has anyone received their money or is this just a big con??? - Jul 12 2010 12:28PM

My new boiler was completed in March and I still have not had my £400. I received an email 31 March acknowledging receiprt of my completed forms also stating that they would process the forms within 25 working days. Still nothing by 14 May so I rang them and was todl that the forms had been processed and were with the accounts department and I would receive payment within a further 25 working days.
Extremely misleading in the adverts which stated refund within 25 days? or merely not clear? You decide.

UPDATE ON PROGRESS: They have confirmed that they have received my voucher and account, but emailed me today to ask if I would confirm my voucher details as they have several for me which I find bizarre as I have only ever had one.

The name of the person to whom I replied is Boiler Scrappage Scheme, presumably no one is responsible for anything hence the delay in obtaining the money.

UPDATE ON OBTAINING £400

Yesterday I tried to telephone Boiler Scrappage but found their system impossible and no one answered. I telephoned the Energy Saving Trust and they put me through with difficulty. I said I had scanned the voucher and other information to them on the 29th April and heard nothing although they send an automatic response saying they would repond within five days. The lady told me they did not respond within five days and scanning was not acceptable. I said I was wary of sending voucher and letter to them in case their administration lost it. She said if they did another voucher would be sent. I sent it yesterday and the £400 is promised within 25 days. That is a long time considering I contacted them on the 29th April and now it is 25 days to wait from now. I have paid the account to the contractor.

I will keep you posted on slow progress.
