Is your energy comparison service unbiased?

Dear Chris, I’ve been looking at changing my energy supplier, but would like to use a comparison service that looks at energy prices for all UK suppliers, not just the “big six.” Is your comparison service unbiased, and does it compare every supplier?

Many thanks,

Christian Constantinides, Leeds, via email, Tuesday 24 March, 2009

On the subject of unbiased comparison services, our expert says...

Thanks for your question; I know how tricky it is to compare energy prices, especially following a round of price cuts.

The good news is, if you’re looking for an impartial, unbiased comparison service, you’re definitely in the right place.

My guide below gives some more information about our site, energy calculator and energy price comparison service, as well as some useful information on comparing prices and switching suppliers:

About EnergyChoices.co.uk

EnergyChoices.co.uk is an independent service for British consumers who want to save money on their gas and electricity bills. The data in our price comparison calculators comes directly from EnergyLinx, a privately-owned Scottish company.

EnergyLinx is completely unbiased, and unlike the majority of energy brokers, lists every single gas and electricity supplier in the UK. Because of this you will find energy suppliers included in our comparison service that you will not find on any other price comparison service in the UK. EnergyLinx checks prices and tariffs on a daily basis, so all information is up-to-date and accurate.

The information in our guides and articles is based on extensive research of the energy market, and the latest information about all available tariffs and energy suppliers.

We receive commission from companies when customers switch using our site, however, this doesn’t push up the cost to you and doesn’t affect the way we list our packages. You will still pay the price quoted on the supplier’s website, but our service lets you compare costs against other suppliers, check for hidden costs or fair usage policies, and look at more than just the price. For example reward schemes and fuel mixes.

Compare energy prices

Comparing energy prices using our online energy comparison service is the easiest way to find out how much you can save by switching to a cheaper supplier.

The cheapest energy supplier will depend on a number of things, including:

  • Where you live
  • How much energy you use
  • The tariff you are on
  • How you pay for your energy

To compare energy prices using our energy calculator ask your current supplier to give you details of your current annual kWh usage (energy consumption), and enter these online. If you don’t have details on your energy consumption, then enter the number of bedrooms of your property into the calculator. We’ll then compare prices for you and show you how much you can save by switching.

Switching suppliers

After comparing prices, if you decide you want to switch, you can do this easily online using our energy switching service. Just fill in a few details and let us do the rest. We’ll notify both your old supplier and your new supplier of the switch. The whole process normally takes between four and eight weeks.

To speak to an EnergyChoices.co.uk adviser, please ring our new helpline on 0800 094 9089

If you’re at all confused about switching, make sure you read our switching FAQ.

Hope this helps you compare energy prices and switch to a cheaper supplier Christian!
