How do I register for British Gas Nectar points?

Dear Chris, I have been with British Gas for years and would like to know how I can sign up for the new Nectar points reward scheme.

Many thanks,

Paul Ferrier, via email, Monday 14 March, 2011

Our expert says...

Now British Gas has teamed up with the Nectar points reward scheme, all of its customer are entitled to a number of points depending on which services they sign up to.

Signing up to British Gas' new Nectar point scheme is fairly straightforward, so here’s how to do it and what you will get for your trouble...

Register for Nectar points:

Existing customers

If you’re an existing customer the best thing is to go online to register your Nectar card with British Gas here: www.britishgas.co.uk.

You can collect 1,000 points in a year just for being a dual fuel customer

If you already have a British Gas online account and a Nectar card, then all you need to do is log in and link up the two accounts.

If you don’t already have a Nectar card then just log in and request a card.

New customers

If you are new to British Gas, then you will have to sign up online here, www.britishgas.co.uk, before you can register your Nectar card or order a new one.

Collect Nectar points:

When you register your Nectar card and sign up online to British Gas you will then have access to a number of Nectar points, including:

  • 800 points for taking both gas and electricity
  • Up to 600 points for a HomeCare plan
  • 800 points for submitting online quarterly meter readings for each fuel (960 points if EnergySmart and submitting monthly meter readings)
  • 200 points for booking an annual boiler service online
  • 200 points annual bonus
  • 500 points if they switch to paperless billing.

There is also an annual bonus of 200 points just for being a British Gas customer.

In fact, you could collect 1,800 points every year - for example, you'll collect 1,000 points in a year just for being a dual fuel customer and another 800 for submitting your quarterly meter readings.

There are many other ways to acquire Nectar points with British Gas, but for a full list, check out the supplier’s website here: www.britishgas.co.uk.

Spend Nectar points:

Once you have accumulated a significant number of Nectar points, you will have various options on where you can spend them.

Among other goods, services and entertainment, you can use your Nectar points at the following places:

  • Argos
  • Homebase
  • Sainsbury’s
  • Eurostar
  • Expedia.co.uk
  • Amazon.co.uk
  • Vue cinemas
  • Chessington World of Adventures

I hope that gives you some clarity on the new British Gas and Nectar points scheme.
