The boiler scrappage scheme was a government initiative, designed to encourage people to replace old boilers with new, more energy-efficient ones.
The boiler scrappage scheme for England went live in January 2010 and all 125,000 vouchers offering £400 discounts on a new boiler were used up by March. The scheme offered eligible households a £400 discount on a new boiler, or renewable heating technology, when they traded in their old one.
The scheme from the Welsh Assembly Government provided a £500 discount for the over 60s when they replace a G-rated boiler with an A-rated boiler.
The main benefit of replacing your boiler is that it will help you reduce your energy bills. New boilers are much more efficient and the government estimates that they could save households an average of £235 a year.
Replacing your boiler will also reduce your carbon footprint. The government expects the scheme to save 140,000 tonnes of CO2 per year – equivalent to taking 45,000 cars off the road.
