British Gas will slash the cost of gas by 10% in February, benefiting more than 7.5million British homes.
British Gas (www.britishgas.co.uk) is the first of the "big six" energy companies to cut its standard gas tariff in the wake of falling oil prices.
The company has pledged to cut its gas bills by 10% from 19 February. British Gas claims this will benefit over 7.5million homes, cutting the average annual gas fuel bill by 10% to £793.
Phil Bentley, British Gas’s managing director said: “We understand energy bills are a significant cost and we are committed to providing the best possible prices for customers.”
British Gas's standard tariff customers paying by direct debit will automatically see the 10% drop on their bills when the price cuts take effect.
In a related move, British Gas will introduce a “prompt payment discount” of up to £15 a year for customers on standard gas tariffs who pay quarterly.
In December, British Gas launched WebSaver 1, its cheapest online dual fuel tariff and a replacement for Click Energy 6. British Gas has said that Websaver 1 will be 10% cheaper than its standard fuel tariffs until 31 March 2010.
Chris Eagle, commercial manager at EnergyChoices.co.uk said:”At last one of the ‘big six’ has made their move and we hope to see the other energy suppliers make similar or even more dramatic cuts to their standard tariffs."
“In the meantime, make sure you are getting the best deal: compare energy prices.”
