Capped tariff

With a capped, or fixed price tariff your supplier will set a price for your gas and electricity which will not change for a fixed period. See capped energy tariffs.

Carbon footprint

A measure of the amount of carbon dioxide or CO2 emitted by an individual or a business. See What is a carbon footprint?

Carbon offsetting

The practice of offsetting carbon emissions by investing in renewable energy such as wind or solar power. Some “green” energy tariffs include carbon offsetting.

Carbon Trust

The Carbon Trust is an independent company funded by the government. Its role is to help the UK combat climate change by helping businesses and the public reduce carbon emissions. Visit www.carbontrust.co.uk.

Cavity wall insulation

Combined tariffs

Combined tariffs, also known as dual fuel tariffs, let customers get both their gas and electricity from the same supplier. Suppliers often give discounts for dual fuel tariffs.

Condensing boiler

A boiler which recovers waste heat in order to increase efficiency.

Consumer Direct

A government-funded service offering information and advice on consumer issues, funded by the Office of Fair Trading. It works local trading standards branches. Visit www.consumerdirect.gov.uk.

Consumer Focus

Previously known as Energywatch, Consumer Focus is a government-funded body which acts on behalf of the consumer. Its role is as an independent watchdog for the gas and electricity industry. Visit www.consumerfocus.org.uk.

Consumption

Consumption of both gas and electricity is measured in kilowatt hours (kWh), with a charge levied for each kWh used.

Credit meter

This is the standard meter that most households have. Credit meter customers will receive either quarterly or monthly bills.
