Why do suppliers change the names of energy tariffs?

Dear Chris, when I received my last energy bill I realised that the name of the tariff I am on has changed. What does this mean, and am I still getting a good deal?

I’m quite confused!

On the subject of tariff name changes, our expert says...

I can understand why you might be confused; the energy market is very complex, and prices and names of tariffs are constantly changing.

My advice to you is to contact your energy supplier and find out why they have changed the name of the tariff. It could be something simple, such as a marketing move, or there could be a more important reason for the change. Here’s the information you need:

Contact your supplier

If your energy supplier has changed the name of your tariff, the first thing you should do is get in contact with them and find out why.

Phone your supplier on:

Energy supplier Phone number
British Gas 0845 600 6113
Scottish & Southern Energy 0845 7444 555
E.ON 0845 059 9905
npower 0845 714 5146
EDF 0800 096 2270
Scottish Power 0845 270 6543

Why do suppliers change the names of energy tariffs?

Ultimately there are two reasons why energy suppliers may change the names of their tariffs:

  • Marketing techniques - Suppliers may change the name of a tariff if there are launching a new marketing campaign, or re-branding a product. In this instance, nothing else about the tariff should change – the rates will be the same and the terms of your contract will be the same. For example, British Gas (www.britishgas.co.uk) changed the name of their WebSaver tariff to Online Energy, but changed some of the features.
  • New products - If your supplier has recently launched a new product, the name of your tariff may also have changed. Suppliers launch new tariffs to entice new customers, though it’s important to note that these don’t always have the best rates. If this is the reason why your tariff name has changed on your bill you should contact your supplier to see what the rates are, and whether the terms and conditions have changed.

If you are not sure why the name has changed, ask your supplier.

The best energy tariff

The cheapest energy tariffs are available to customers who sign up to an online tariff, such as Online energy, and pay their bills by monthly direct debit.

Most suppliers also offer discounts for customers with dual fuel (both gas and electricity from the same supplier). You should also start submitting your own meter readings, as estimated readings can often be inaccurate and you’ll pay more for a meter reader to visit your home.

Hope this helps Tally, and remember, if anything on your energy bill changes or you have a query, it’s important to contact your supplier straightaway.
