Protecting consumers is Ofgem’s (www.ofgem.gov.uk) “first priority”. As the UK’s energy regulator, Ofgem is responsible for a number of issues such as promoting competition in the energy market and encouraging energy providers to increase energy efficiency measures in the fight against climate change.

It is also responsible for taking account of the needs of vulnerable customers, particularly older people, those with disabilities and those on low incomes and ensuring that all energy providers offer social tariffs to help the fuel poor cope with the rising costs of gas and electricity.

Ofgem no longer deals directly with consumer complaints. Instead these are referred to Consumer Focus (formerly EnergyWatch) or the Energy Ombudsman. Ofgem’s Consumer Affairs Team now only deals with enquiries regarding its policies and to ensure that all complaints regarding energy providers are referred to Consumer Focus appropriately.

I presently make use of Scottish Power (SP) as my preferred electricity provider.I recently received, via post, email, and telephone certain information from an organisation named "The Utility Warehouse"(UW),who committed to lowering my spend on electricity per month,to also avail of discounted tariffs via the SOCIAL TARIFFS channel.Upon dealing with UW in order to explore their options and hopefully reduce my monthly spend,UW denied all knowledge of the existence of such tariffs, telling me they had never heard of them ! Are you able to assist on this matter, please ?(I am entitled to Social Tariffs,I believe),owing to my age - I am 61 (Sixty One),and would appreciate your comments on this matter.I find it very hard to believe they are not au fait with Social Tariffs,at all,and would very much appreciate your intervention on this important matter.Thank You.John E.Carter (Tel : 01512917266 (H) or 07923132785) - Mar 21 2012 2:59PM
