Over 2.8 million households switched their energy supplier in the first seven months of 2007 according to figures released by Ofgem today.
The research showed that all customers who haven’t yet switched could save more than £100 by taking advantage of the latest tariffs.
It said that the average yearly savings ranged from £60 for direct debit and £86 for standard credit, but it is prepayment customers who can save the most - around £100 on average and rising to as much as £170 per year in some regions.
Alistair Buchanan, Ofgem Chief Executive, said: “With winter drawing in and all suppliers having lowered their prices, now is a good time for all customers to check whether they are getting a good deal for their energy.
“We also want to highlight the benefits of changing how you pay for your energy and the special tariffs many suppliers offer to those struggling to pay their energy bills,” he added.
Michael Phillips, EnergyChoices.co.uk product director, said: “The most competitive deals available today are paperless and online.
“By agreeing to manage your bills online and enter your own meter readings, you’ll not only be able to take advantage of the latest price reductions, but you’ll also eliminate the risk of overpaying through estimated billing.”
