The energy giant said that the price hikes are to compensate for a 16% increase in its own distribution and transmission costs since March 2009.

These costs represent around a fifth of a customer's electricity bill, said EDF.

It added that a typical electricity customer affected by this price adjustment should expect to pay around £1 extra a month on their bills.

These are the latest in a line of energy price increases, and people should expect more to follow

From October, new prices will be launched for EDF's electricity tariffs including:

  • Standard
  • Green
  • Climate Balance
  • Eco20:20
  • Energy Discount Plan v2
  • Energy Discount Plan v3
  • Energy Assist
  • Online 1 - 6
  • Online Saver v1

Chris Eagle, commercial manager at Energychoices.co.uk, said: “These are the latest in a line of energy price increases, and people should expect more to follow.

“Although some EDF customers will not experience any change to their bills, it would be sensible for everyone to compare all the different electricity deals out there and switch if necessary.

“To be sure you do not get stung by any price hikes and you are not already paying over the odds for your gas and electricity, always make sure you regularly compare the market and shop around for the best energy deal available for you.”
