Centrica, the parent company of British Gas (www.britishgas.co.uk), announced at its AGM yesterday that profits were up, and forecasts are predicting record earnings for 2007.
British Gas has regained more than 900,000 customers since announcing its first of two price cuts this year, on February 8th. It now has 15.8 million customers on its books, and has recruited 800 new customer service staff members.
The energy price cuts are down to a huge drop in wholesale gas prices, but have they gone far enough? Many analysts are suggesting that British Gas could cut as much as £200 off the average dual fuel bill to truly reflect the amount by which wholesale prices have dropped.
At the AGM, Centrica admitted that its performance “benefited significantly from unusually low wholesale prices for gas and power”.
British Gas has also been criticised for reserving its best prices for online customers who can manage their accounts on the internet and pay by direct debit.
