British Gas launches green energy advice service

Thursday 19 April, 2007

British Gas has announced the launch of a new organisation to deal with green energy issues.

The new venture is called British Gas New Energy, and it will be responsible for the following:

  • Advising customers about making their homes and businesses more environmentally friendly
  • Supplying green products and services
  • Launching a service that provides Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs), which will be mandatory for anyone selling a UK house from June 1st 2007
  • The new organisation intends to train 500 engineers to carry out EPC surveys by the time they are made compulsory
  • Supplying solar heating panels, which British Gas engineers are now qualified to install. British Gas has recently formed a partnership with some local authorities, which gives solar panel customers a discount of £500 on their Council Tax
  • Exploring possibilities for new green technology and ways in which British Gas New Energy can provide and install it
  • Extending British Gas’s range of green energy products.

Sam Laidlaw, the Chief Executive of British Gas’s parent company Centrica, said: "Most UK homes are poorly insulated and the energy loss and emissions levels from them are much higher than they could be. We can use our expertise in the green energy sector to help home owners significantly reduce their impact on the environment and take a lead in this rapidly growing new business area."

Chris Eagle, commercial manager at EnergyChoices.co.uk, commented: “Proactive moves from utility companies to encourage energy efficiency is good news. However, every UK household should be taking basic energy conservation steps now without relying on hand holding.”
