Fixed price tariffs

Article updated: Wednesday 29 April, 2009

If you’re worried about the rising cost of your energy bills, and want to protect yourself from further possible increases in the coming year then a fixed price energy tariff might just be the peace of mind that you’re looking for.

Fixed energy tariffs promise not to increase the cost of your gas or electricity - or both if you’re a dual fuel customer - for a set amount of time, even if prices across the rest of the market sky-rocket.

However, depending on the energy supplier and the tariff you sign up to, you might have to pay a bit more than the current market-leading tariff to be able to set your costs in this way. And if prices go down during your fixed price period, you could be left paying a much higher price for your energy.

Read our breakdown of some of the UK's energy suppliers' fixed price tariffs, and see if you can save money by switching...

E.ON fixed price tariffs

E.ON (www.eonenergy.com) has launched its Energy Saver tariffs. These dual fuel deals allow you to fix your gas and electricity prices until a set period. The newest tariff, Energy Saver v8, lets you fix your prices until 1 August 2010. You will also benefit if E.ON reduces its standard energy prices at any point during the contracted term.

E.ON has also launched the StayWarm fixed price tariff, designed specifically for the over-60s, which allows you to fix your energy prices for 12 months. You must pay by monthly direct debit with this tariff.

It is important to note that cancellation charges do apply. These are up to £60 depending on the fixed deal you choose.

Information on E.ON's fixed price deals are available through our energy comparison service, just enter your postcode, details and select compare capped tariffs, or visit www.eonenergy.com.

Scottish Power fixed price tariffs

Scottish Power (www.scottishpower.co.uk) has launched its PriceSure Energy Online tariff. You can fix your gas and electricity prices until February 2010.

It is important to note that cancellation charges do apply. These are £30 for electricity and £20 for gas, however these are lower than other suppliers in the market.

Information on the PriceSure Energy Online tariff is available through our energy comparison service, just enter your postcode, details and select compare capped Tariffs.

EDF fixed price tariffs

Price Freeze 2009 from EDF Energy caps your energy until 30 September 2009, so even if energy prices do continue to rise, they won’t go beyond your capped rate. And if its standard prices fall below the level at which you signed up, your Price Freeze prices will also fall.

However, if you leave this tariff before 30 September 2009 there is an early termination fee of £20 for electricity-only customers, and £50 for dual fuel customers.

New tariffs

Other energy providers such as npower (www.npower.com) have offered fixed energy tariffs in the past, so keep your eye on the market to ensure that you get the best possible price for you energy.
