Energy Saving Doesn't Have to Cost The Earth

Did you know that we in the UK waste around £6 million worth of energy every year? This means every £3 you spend on heating your home, £1 is wasted through poor energy efficiency.*

Check out our energy saving guide, and see how much you could save:

1. Shop around

You could save up to £150 or more in as little as 10 minutes simply by switching your gas and electricity to a different supplier. More than four million people switched their energy supplier last year and cut their bills by around £150 each according to Ofgem.

Check out the Latest Energy Price Cuts to see how much you could save.

2. Turn it down

According to The Energy Saving Trust, turning your thermostat down by a mere one degree in your home can reduce your energy use by 6%.

This could save you £30 a year and best of all, you are unlikely to notice the change.

3. Left on stand by

Did you know leaving electrical items such as TVs, videos and DVD players on standby uses 70% of the power they use when on?

Instead of leaving them on standby, turn them off; it will trim your energy use by 1.3% and save you around £25 a year.

4. Triple A your appliance

Watch out for the Triple A energy rating logo on washing machines, fridge and freezers. Replacing an old appliance with a AAA rated one could save up to £45 a year, costing you less to run as well as producing fewer carbon emissions.

5. Washing matters

If you wash your clothes at 40 instead of 60 degrees it could save you £12 a year.

6. Energize your bulbs

The quickest way to energy saving is energy efficient light bulbs. Costing around £3.50 and they typically last 12 times longer than ordinary bulbs. Most crucially they could save you a staggering £9 per year per bulb.

With the average home containing 17 incandescent bulbs you could save up to £153 by swapping them over.

7. Get insulated

Installing 10” of loft insulation could cost you around £230 however by doing so you could save between £180 to £220 every year there after.

8. Don't land yourself in hot water

Ensure your hot water tank and pipes are insulated using a 3” thick british standard insulating jacket. They cost very little but could save you up to £20 a year.

9. Losing heat?

If your home is not insulated, nearly a fifth of heat will be lost in your home through your windows. Consider double glazing; it can save you £80 - £100 a year.

10. Outdated boiler?

Updating your boiler to an energy efficient one, may be expensive but if your boiler is more than 15 years old it could well be time you considered it.

An energy efficient update would save you about £90 a year on your fuel bills

11. Install a water tank

They will only cost around £10-£20 but you could save up to £25 a year on your fuel expenses simply by installing one.

12. Is it time to consider a water meter?

If you have more bedrooms than people in your home you could save over £200 by switching to a water meter. If you're unsure contact your water company and ask them to provide you with a ‘water meter calculator’. With acn accurate comparison this will make it easy for you to work out if you could save.
