Online energy tariffs are £249 cheaper than standard energy plans, but only 5% of the population is benefiting.
Online energy tariff prices are down 12% in 2009, while standard tariffs are just 4% lower.
At the beginning of the year, online plans were £170 a year cheaper than standard plans but now they are £249 cheaper, according to uSwitch.
But research shows only 5% of households are on online energy tariffs.
Will Marples, energy expert at uSwitch, said: “Online energy plans are consistently cheaper than standard energy plans – but the message just doesn’t seem to be getting through.”
He added: “Worryingly, those who arguably have the most to gain – the elderly and the vulnerable – are the least likely to be benefiting.”
Chris Eagle, commercial manager at Energychoices.co.uk, said: “If you have easy access to the internet, you should seriously consider switching to an online tariff.
“Doing a quick comparison with our energy calculator will show you just how much you could save each year.”
