Consumer Focus

Consumer Focus

Article updated: Tuesday 26 May, 2009

Consumer Focus (www.consumerfocus.org.uk) went live on 1 October 2008, taking over from EnergyWatch, PostWatch and the National Consumer Council.

New legislation has made it a more powerful body than its predecessors, allowing it to investigate any consumer complaint of “wider importance”, but its first priority is helping get more people out of fuel poverty.

As well as having its own directive, any complaints made to Ofgem will now be referred to Consumer Focus to handle, and if you’re having problems with your energy provider you can complain direct to Consumer Focus yourself.

It will investigate complaints from energy consumers relating to a disconnection or a threat of disconnection and complaints made by or on behalf of vulnerable consumers, as well as working to ensure that all energy companies have a proper complaints procedure and are members of a redress scheme approved by Ofgem.

4 out of 6 previous complaints about Eon!!! What does that say abouth them? - Sep 17 2009 7:11PM
Yesterday I received a letter from staywarm (EON) saying my monthly payment would be increased from £82.00 to £130.00 from next month. The reason given is that although my gas useage is very low, my electricity is just high enough to take me into the increased price band, hence the price of £130.00. When I did a price comparison on uswitch and others, using the readings they have given me for my useage for the year, I found that their own online, open to everbody quote was equal to £76.00 per month. Not only less than the £82.00 per month I have been paying, but an astonishing £48.00 less than their proposed increase! How can this staywarm tarriff, which is supposed to help the over 60's,charge an absolutely ridiculous and obscene amount over and above the rest of their customers?? I thought it was meant to be a social tarriff, or is it just a fancy name to fool the public and rip off the elderly. Any help on where to complain would be appreciated. - Sep 17 2009 7:04PM
They tell us that inflation is down partly due to lower energy bills.
EON supplies my energy and this last period I have used 105 units less than this time period last year, yet the cost this year is an increase of £10.45. So much for lower energy bills

Having always been in credit with both gas and electricity i was more than surprised to receive a bill f or both stating that i owed money on both accounts and that my DD would be increased substantially. As my meter had been read some 5/6 weeks earlier i was surprised to be told my bill was an est.from date of reading??.quote from my bill 'we have listened to our customers who tell us they dont like estimated bills. So now you receive a statement every six months to coincide with when we have called to try to read your meter.' Not at all happy with uninformed increases. - Jun 20 2009 10:52PM
how can eEon justify a standing charge on a pre-payment key meter in the midlands area at three pounds and fifty seven per week, this daylight robery, considering the fact that when we went, volentarily on to the system many years ago and were told that there was no premium for this service. at no time were we informed that this was the case - Nov 29 2008 8:06PM

Following your revalation that Energy Companies profit from the poor. you may wish to consider how much they profit from the Direct Debit scheme. EG British Gas has increased my DD for Gas from £38 to £71 pm citing increase in gas costs and period of heaviest use post Christmas. I have consistently been in credit ( last two quarters £47 and £57) and have had full insulation.. I believe the increase is excessive and that they are using the scheme as a source of cheap loans. Investigation may be justified - Nov 15 2008 12:52PM
