One in four people have had to reduce the amount they spend on heating because of high housing costs, according to charity.
Millions of Brits are cutting back on heating, despite having to cope with sub-zero temperatures in what could be the coldest winter in 30 years.
Around a quarter of the 5,438 people surveyed by housing charity Shelter said they are reducing their energy usage in order to meet their mortgage and rent payments.
Kay Boycott, director of policy and campaigns at Shelter, said: “It’s shocking to think that high housing costs are forcing people to make a choice between keeping warm and keeping a roof over their heads.”
She warned: “In these extreme temperatures, those without proper heating could be risking their lives.”
Shelter has estimated that over 1.4 million children are living in households that are cutting down on heating.
Chris Eagle, commercial manager at Energychoices.co.uk, expressed particular concern at the figures, considering the current weather situation.
He advised: “If you are concerned about meeting the cost of heating during the cold snap, read our top 10 tips to reduce your energy bills and visit the Directgov website (www.direct.gov.uk) to find out whether you may be eligible for any grants to make your home more energy efficient.”
