British Gas New Energy
British Gas, the UK’s biggest energy supplier, has launched a new business called British Gas New Energy, which it hopes will make homes more economically friendly.
As part of the New Energy initiative, the former monopoly will sell and install solar heating panels that will heat water for the home, and could reduce council tax bills by up to £500 under some local authorities. British Gas expects that the scheme, which rewards residents who install the panels - from £4,300 - will be adopted by more local authorities as it grows in popularity.
In a bid to establish itself as the “green” energy supplier, British Gas ensures that all of the 100,000 or so domestic boilers that it installs each year are energy efficient, A-grade boilers that can be linked up to its solar panels and other types of renewable energy sources.
Sam Laidlaw, chief executive of British Gas parent company Centrica, said: “Most UK homes are poorly insulated and the energy loss and emissions levels from them are much higher than they could be. We can use our expertise in the green energy sector to help home owners significantly reduce their impact on the environment and take a lead in this rapidly growing new business area.”
Their New Energy business will also supply Energy Performance Certificates which will become mandatory when the Government’s Home Information Packs (HIPs) are introduced later in the year.
Customers who have installed cavity wall insulation can already benefit from similar schemes that not only save them money on their energy bills, but could also help them cut their council tax bill.
