British Gas’ cheap online energy tariff, Click Energy 5 has been replaced by Click Energy 6, meaning cash-strapped consumers will no longer be able to get the highly competitive Click Energy 5 rate as prices increase by 45% for gas and 20% for electricity.

British Gas has revealed that its Click Energy 5 tariff is to be replaced by Click Energy 6, with immediate effect (30/09/08).

Click Energy 6 is still the cheapest online dual-fuel tariff in market, however customers who are already signed up to the Click Energy 5 tariff will see their bills increase by around £305 a year as prices are increased.

Commenting on the launch of British Gas Click Energy 6, Scott Byrom, from moneysupermarket.com said: “This move has been a long-time coming. The ‘wait and see’ approach has certainly worked for British Gas as it still holds the crown for the most competitive offering on the market. It will be interesting to see how the other leading providers react as this could spark providers to jostle for the top spot.”

Click Energy 5 was previously priced at around £845 a year for the average household, but the move from British Gas will now see Click Energy 5 customers’ bills increase to around £1,150.

While the price of new online energy tariff Click Energy 6 is marginally cheaper at £1,057 a year for the average household fuel bill.

Chris Eagle of EnergyChoices.co.uk says: “Click Energy 6 is the cheapest online tariff available therefore anyone already signed on to Click Energy 5 should switch now to Click Energy 6.”

Chris continues: “However, if you’re uncertain about the energy market and want to secure your energy bills, then switching to a fixed price tariff is your best option (but more expensive than an online tariff). If you are still on a standard energy tariff, you will benefit from taking you bills online and signing up to British Gas Click Energy 6 tariff.”

If this article is correct, and it may be, then it is a disgrace., but may explain a lot about British Gas and how they do business. The implication is that users who were on Click 5, as I thought we were, will be moved to a higher tarriff without adequate notification - or indeed any. This may explain why we appeared to be a on a higher tarrif a year or so back, yet I thought we had selected a cheap one. If the energy companies can simply re-allocate customers to higher tarriffs without letting them know, as may be implied by this article, then it could be worth really chasiing this up hard as such a business practice is really unfair, and-consumer, and I wouuld argure possibly illegal. Perhaps there's some small print in the contract which allows them to do this legally, in which case iit is not illegal, but nevertheless very sharp practice. - Apr 3 2009 1:51PM

The article needs a clear date/timestamp to make terms like 'immediate' relevant.
I found the page via google so have not viewed the rest of the site.
