British Gas has announced that it will cut its energy prices next month, with gas prices falling by 17% and electricity by 11% in a much-welcomed move as Britain is hit by yet another cold spell. See how much you can save >>>
Their decision comes hot on the heals of Scottish & Southern’s statement that it will be reducing prices in the coming months, and the announcement by npower that it will also be cutting costs of its “Sign Online” tariff.
Phil Bentley, Managing Director at British Gas said: “As a result of this move our customers will be better off and for many vulnerable households that struggle to balance their bills, our social tariff will remove the burden of not being able to access our cheapest prices, typically direct debit, irrespective of their method of payment.”
But Chris Eagle, EnergyChoices.co.uk communication manager, warned that the “big six” energy suppliers still had some way to go. He said: “Despite these positive moves from British Gas, Scottish & Southern and npower, the most competitive deals invariably go to new customers. So the best way to take advantage of the coming price war is to switch providers.”
