Free light bulbs for British Gas customers

British Gas turn into Bright Sparks

Writes Dan Drage dan.drage@consumerchoices.co.uk

British Gas has piloted the biggest ever energy-saving light bulb free giveaway.

The scheme, launched May 7th, will see 52 million energy-saving light bulbs distributed to British Gas (www.britishgas.co.uk) customers, at a quantity of four per customer. The light bulbs will be supplied free of charge.

British Gas aims to save 9 million tonnes of carbon dioxide through this initiative, with the scheme kicking off in the north and gradually being rolled out to the rest of the UK.

"We’re giving Britain the green light to save energy"

A British Gas spokesperson had the following to say:

‘By putting these light bulbs in customer’s hands, we are helping them to take additional steps towards going green. We’re giving Britain the green light to save energy.’

The Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) bulbs will be sent to customers with energy saving advice literature. British Gas maintains the initiative is different from any other of its kind because it does not involve redeeming coupons.

Chris Eagle, Commercial Manager at Energy Choices, is impressed by the magnitude of this gesture:

‘This is a big gesture from British Gas as they try to galvanise their green credentials. Having reduced the price of their Click Energy 5 tariff last week, ensuring more customers will receive paperless bills, British Gas are doing all they can to promote greener energy consumption.’

  1. Since I the customer ultimately end up paying for them they're hardly 'free'. British gas, please stop spending MY money on stuff I haven't asked for, don't need, don't want and have no use for. It is supremely arrogant of you to decide that this is what I should spend my money on. If I wanted to use these light bulbs I am perfectly capable of buying them for myself.

  3. Oh my word. I am so angry about being sent these - I had to drive all the way to the parcel depot to pick up essentially omething I DON'T want and didn't ask for. They're not FREE - British Gas has paid for them out of OUR money. I'm sending mine back, with no postage and a firmly worded letter to state I do NOT want any of this rubbish tokenism sent to me in future.
