British Gas announces another price cut

May, 2007

British Gas (www.britishgas.co.uk) is cutting its standard energy rates with effect from today. Electricity prices will fall by 6%, with gas prices falling by 3% on a standard tariff.

This is the second time British Gas has announced cuts this year, making a total saving of £207 on an average dual fuel bill. The previous reductions came into effect on March 12th. Since then, the company has welcomed more than 650,000 new customers.

At the time of writing, British Gas’s standard dual fuel tariff is cheaper than the local supplier in every UK region.

Phil Bentley, Managing Director of British Gas, said: "We want British Gas to offer the best value around. We’ve taken the lead on lower prices and we are committed to restoring our customer service to an industry-leading level. That’s why we’ve added an extra 800 people to our call centres, scrapped plans for the £5 late payment charge, and why we are reducing our prices again – and doing it immediately.”

This latest change comes a week after British Gas was accused of letting customer complaint levels almost triple over the past two years.

Chris Eagle, Commercial Manager at www.energychoices.co.uk, commented: “This is obviously great news for customers, particularly coming so soon after the March price cuts and British Gas’s online tariff reductions. But customers shouldn’t give up on shopping around for their energy supplier: they can still save money by signing up for an online tariff and paying by Direct Debit.”
